Low cost trains!

Saturday, 22 September 2007

Yes. We are used to low cost airlines. Let’s remember a funny ad in which Valentino says -more or less- I will go back to Italy. I do only have to pay the taxes!. Ok. I stop now with the jokes I will go to the facts!

This summer I was traveling to Paris. Back in Spain I talked with a friend who was going to travel by train to Paris. Well. I asked him about the price. And he told me 19EUR TTC. That means 19EUR all taxes included. What are you telling me, man?¿

The answer is idgtv. That’s how to reach Paris -or other- in the low cost manner. Yes, bad timetables. But remember 19EUR! and you travel in TGV. Just the same. Stopping in the same stations.

Saturday, 22 September 2007

Hey! Before iphone was unlocked I was telling myself once and again what an iphone is for?! Just showing off!. Oh my god!. That could be but it pains.

That pain can become a big pleasure. And now and expensive device can be a bargain thanks to the dollar and much more to the hacker community.

Hacking opens your mind and makes you much more free. Don’t forget!

All Biz Class revolution

Saturday, 20 January 2007

Low Cost companies were a revolution. They changed most of the models that said that flying should be extremely expensive due a large number of reasons.

New all Biz Class companies will also become a revolution. It will be smaller as far as the target itself is.

Today I read about SilverJet that will start soon in the All Bizz discount market. Flat beds, good meals, fast security controls, airports closed to the cities,… and about three times cheaper than the traditional companies in the Biz fare, probably offering less.

Nice to see.

The best router hackers in the world, gather around FON

Thursday, 22 June 2006

Some of the best router hackers of the world came to FON headquarters in Madrid last month.

Felix Fietkau aka nbd, a young Computer Science student based in Hamburg who is one of the big boys behind the openwrt, Sebastian Gottschall aka Brainslayer (seen in RedHerring), a fancy hacker that leads all alone the dd-wrt project with the help and back of some other developers and Imre Kaloz, a Hungarian hardware integration artist, also one of the pilars of openwrt, came to visit us at FON.

From left to right: Sebastian, me, Felix and Imre

Felix has been helping us since february. He started supporting us from the OpenWrt side and now is very integrated and a crucial guy in our development. He is still a student, but works better, faster and more than any other guy I met previously.

Sebastian joined us also in the same time Felix did. Initially he made his very advanced firmware be FONready, but as time passed, we noticed one version ofthe firmware was enough work to cope with and now, we are all focused on the OpenWrt based firmware, including Sebastian himself. Of course, every bit of work he can reuse for his personal project, he is allowed to.

Imre is the newest incorporation. As Felix and Sebastian do, he works from home. Being an expert on hardware integration, he is doing the background work on the future fonera device. He works hard and even though he didn’t have that much time yet, he already demonstrated that getting him was a worthy movement.

Florian Fainelli, also developer member of the OpenWrt project was here to. He came from France (he is currently studying in Paris). He is very busy right now with his studies but is eager to help FON and join the great team we are building. He already did a very nice patch for our next firmware and will take more projects in the future.

As I said, they came to Madrid, to see what FON is like in the inside; to feel integrated with the team (everybody was very nice with them, even though the Spanish non-techies were thinking of them as crazy geeks); to see what the future plans are and what do we count with them for.

The encounter was a great success. we all enjoyed a lot and even went out for dinner on the second day. We took some brown tequila (Sebastian’s favorite) and Rhum. Imre and Sebastian, who were not very friendly to each other in the past (some geeks might know this), got on VERY well and ended up taking tequila altogether.

Teo (backrow in front of Felix) and Florian (front row rightside) also joined the dinner

FON is really gathering the best talents of the world in OpenSource firmwares. They enjoy the kind of work we offer them and they are happy because they get what they like: new drivers for bleeding edge devices, amazing routers, gadgets, support from manufacturers (atheros, accton, Linksys,…). It’s a great symbiosis. And me, personaly, I’m learning a great deal of things! We will, for sure, make another meeting like this. Hopefully, we’ll have an even better team with many more great hackers! (see http://www.flickr.com/photos/iurgi for some nice pics of the event)

A380 test flight

Sunday, 21 May 2006

Last week the A380 test flight landed in London Heathrow. The BBC broadcasted it, and what’s more important, they came into the plane.

Inside it we can see no seat, but dozens of computers and gadgets.

If you think Jumbo is incredibly huge, the A380 is a bit more.

Darfur and the U.N. reform

Tuesday, 2 May 2006

What to do?. Good question.

What happened in Somalia with the U.S. and also with France arose a strong lobby against any intervention in countries in which the national interests weren’t related to the internal strives. A criteria (not always fullfilled) for intervention in third countries was then established on the same basis in many countries.

Intervention is something against logic and international relations but when genocide and ethnic cleansing is a daily activity intervention should be a must.

We must listen to other countries and cultures and acept them but there are a few limits nobody should pull down.

An international comunity is strong when establishes priorities, not based on priorities of the veto countries but on a rigid few international laws.

Darfur is one urgent reason more for a U.N. reform

Linux on board

Saturday, 25 March 2006

Airbus uses Linux for their entertainment systems, at least, on some A-330, A-320 and A-340 series.

We can see it on this image taken on an Air Algeria A-330 flight. Wouter Liefting also reports on Linux Journal about the topic on a Northwest A-330

Airbus A-340-400 also uses linux for the entertaiment system. You can see it on this image.

The same seems to happen on an Iberia A-320 as you can see on this picture.
